Instead, he walked through the door, rifled their file system and took a few folders with him. That is inexcuseable.
I don't believe he should do hard time for his exploits but do think he should be put on extended probation, making it mandatory that he discontinue his 'hacking' efforts and be allowed to use the computer for only legal activity.
If he violates his probation, then I think it would be appropriate to send him to prison for a short period of time.
Letting him off will only invite others to do the same with the possibility of more drastic repercussions like stealing privileged information and publicly divulging same.
