Want to know why C/C++ is used? Because there's no good reason that my mail client should take 200 megs of ram and 100% cpu. The "CPU IS CHEAP, MEMORY IS CHEAP, WHY SHOULD I OPTIMIZE?" attitude works if you like shelling out for hardware upgrades every year or so, but of us who use old hardware, it's the bane of our existence.

Really what's at issue here is the quality/abilities of the developers. Good coders learn from previous mistakes and don't, or at least try not to, write bad code. They audit. With huge projects, that takes time. No language will stop an idiot from making mistakes.
